A Paint Day at Grosh!

A Paint Day at Grosh!

Sep 5, 2014

You would figure that every day is a paint day at Grosh, but not for Backdrop Consultants. Today they got out of the office and into the studio! This was uncharted territory for them and probably for most. Not many people can say they helped paint a 22’ H x 50’ W backdrop! The Grosh scenic artists definitely looked worried. However, Greg, their fearless leader, and Scenic Creative Director, had full confidence…and the option to primer and paint over any mistakes.

Full painter's body suites!

Full painter’s body suites!

First we had to gear up! Adorning ourselves in old clothes, shoe covers and even a couple of full painter’s body suites, Greg gave us a tutorial on the ins and outs of the Grosh Hollywood Studio. There are six high ceiling frames that allow the backdrops to be lowered by a counterweight down two flights through openings in the floor. He went over a few safety caveats, like not falling through the openings, then showed us the tools of their trade. To begin with, the backdrop design is divided up into a grid and each section is drawn out on large sheets of paper. An electro pounce machine, which uses electricity, burns minute holes into the paper, creating a stencil. The stencil is then held up against the canvas and used to make an outline of the design.

Grosh Kicks off the New Year at The Special Event Tradeshow

Feb 12, 2013

Grosh kicked off the New Year by attending The Special Event Tradeshow in Chicago.

In case you haven’t heard of it: TSE is “the largest tradeshow and conference for event professionals in the world”. One of the great things about this tradeshow was that there were 3 days of exhibiting which allowed us to meet and showcase a variety of Backdrops and Drapery.  Since the show lasted for 3 days; our team thought “why not change the theme of our booth each day?”…and we did!

Grosh has Creative Mojo

Grosh has Creative Mojo

Oct 6, 2011

Grosh’s Custom Department is made up of some amazingly talented artists who are always willing to flex their creative muscles for clients.  Sometimes this means creating an original backdrop for clients and other times, maybe something quite unexpected.  Grosh’s Lead Scenic Artist, Greg Viera shares with us what happens within Grosh’s artistic department.

Can you share with us some of the creative projects you have completed for clients that are not painted backdrops?

Greg: There are so many! Here are two different examples; one that is quite small in size compared to what we normally create and the other similar to backdrops in size. We painted a 5’ x7’ mural for a client that was to be mounted on a roller and then installed as a TV cover. When TV was not in use,  beautiful artwork was concealing the equipment behind it seamlessly. We painted a large mural on the outside of a building in downtown LA for HTC/Smuggler that was used as a backdrop in a TV commercial. It was painted to look as if it was created with paintball guns.
