In anticipation of the USITT conference and tradeshow coming up March 16th to the 19th, we wanted to feature our partner company, Tru-Roll. They specialize in theatrical rigging and hardware. They will be in booth #1827 with the Grosh backdrop hanging right next door on wall #5.  Below is a brief history of the many services they provide to the many businesses involved in our distinct industry.

Tru-Roll was created and run by Jack Grosh in 1947 to fill clients’ needs for tracks and rigging services.  Jack was so meticulous on how each system was made and adapted that Tru-Roll came to be known as “the Cadillac” of theatrical rigging in entertainment technology.  Being the best in the business, they expanded and in 1993 Tru-Roll opened up separate offices and is now a division of Advanced Entertainment Technology.  They have broadened the number of services they offer, but still specialize in designing and manufacturing standard and customized theatrical rigging systems for drapery.  Many of their clients include schools, universities, theatres, theme parks, casinos, event producers, film, and churches. They’ve worked with such names as Disney, Warner Bros., Universal, Paramount, UCLA, and USC, to name a few.

With eager anticipation of Mardi Gras and the inspiration of our newly painted New Orleans backdrop, Grosh started digging around in the history of this celebration.  This unique tradition has cultivated a society in New Orleans that paints the town in history and pride.

New Orleans was established in 1718 by Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne de Bienville. By the 1730’s, Mardi Gras was celebrated openly, but not with the parades we know today.  In the early 1740’s, Louisiana’s governor, the Marquis de Vaudreuil established elegant society balls, which became the model for the New Orleans balls of today.  In 1872 a group of businessmen invented a King of Carnival, Rex, to preside over the first daytime parade.  This parade was to honor the visiting Russian Grand Duke Alexis Romanoff.  The businessmen presented the colors of Romanoff’s family: purple, green and gold; with purple representing justice, gold representing power and green representing faith.  These colors would officially become the colors of Mardi Gras and most notably the historical and infamous, Bourbon Street.

A Paint Day at Grosh!

You would figure that every day is a paint day at Grosh, but not for Backdrop Consultants. Today they got out of the office and into the studio! This was uncharted territory for them and probably for most. Not many people can say they helped paint a 22’ H x 50’ W backdrop! The Grosh scenic artists definitely looked worried. However, Greg, their fearless leader, and Scenic Creative Director, had full confidence…and the option to primer and paint over any mistakes.

First we had to gear up! Adorning ourselves in old clothes, shoe covers and even a couple of full painter’s body suites, Greg gave us a tutorial on the ins and outs of the Grosh Hollywood Studio. There are six high ceiling frames that allow the backdrops to be lowered by a counterweight down two flights through openings in the floor. He went over a few safety caveats, like not falling through the openings, then showed us the tools of their trade. To begin with, the backdrop design is divided up into a grid and each section is drawn out on large sheets of paper. An electro pounce machine, which uses electricity, burns minute holes into the paper, creating a stencil. The stencil is then held up against the canvas and used to make an outline of the design.
